Church History

Established in 1869

Pleasant Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church was organized on June 29, 1869 at Taylor’s Creek, Georgia. The church was commonly known as Taylor’s Creek Church and was first led by Reverend Piner Martin, a local community leader.

The church began on 16.6 acres of property that included a small frame house where services were held. As membership grew, the first official church was built through the labor and sacrifice of men, women, boys, and children who hauled lumber and materials. Upon completion, the church was named Pleasant Grove.

In 1941, the church property and members’ homes were purchased by the United States Government. That area is now known as the Fort Stewart U.S. Army Installation. Though families were scattered, the faith of Pleasant Grove remained strong.

In 1942, trustees purchased land in the Allenhurst community, and with dedication, sacrifice, donated materials, and shared labor, Pleasant Grove was rebuilt and opened again for service.
